hepatotoxicity in rats and to give a scientific rational for its folklore use. Rats were divided into five different groups each
having six. Hepatotoxicity was induced by oral administration of 100mg/kg isoniazid for 30 days which significantly p<0.01
elevated the serum levels of biochemical markers like SGPT, SGOT, ALP, Bilirubin, Protein and depleted antioxidant
enzymes catalase, GSHand SOD. Administration of Calotropis gigantea extract significantly prevented the alteration of
isoniazide induced biochemical and antioxidant enzyme parameters. The effect of extract was compared with a standard drug,
Silymarin which shows the similar results as it.The changes in biochemical parameters were furthur supported by
histolopathological studies which shows protection against hyperplasia of epithelium hepatocyte degeneration caused by
isoniazide. Hepatoprotective activity of the study plant may be attributed to the anti-oxidant principles present in it.
<Email>vijaykiran.m93@gmail.com</Email><articletype>Research</articletype><volume>5</volume><issue>4</issue><year>2015</year><keyword>Calotropis gigantea,Isoniazid,Hepatotoxicity,Oxidative stress</keyword><AUTHORS>M.Vijay Kiran, A.Swetha Sree,S.tripathy, K.Srinivas</AUTHORS><afflication>Sri Vasavi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tadepalligudem - 534101, West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh, India.,Sri Vasavi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tadepalligudem - 534101, West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh, India.,Sri Vasavi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tadepalligudem - 534101, West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh, India.,Sri Vasavi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tadepalligudem - 534101, West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh, India.</afflication></Article></Articles>
