Spontaneous reporting of
ADR is the cornerstone of pharmacovigilance. Underreporting of ADR is a huge problem due to lack of reporting knowledge
amongst healthcare professionals. The main objective of the study was to assess the Knowledge Attitude and Practice (KAP)
of clinical practitioners towards ADR reporting and pharmacovigilance in tertiary care hospital and to identify cause of under
reporting of ADRs and to Propose solutions to improve the deficiencies or gaps. In this study, suitable pre validated
questionnaire was designed and was conducted among 135 clinical practitioners. Informed consent was taken. KAP of the
clinical practitioners towards ADR reporting and pharmacovigilance was statistically analysed by mean±SD and percentage
was calculated. In this study, the knowledge of the clinical practitioners regarding ADR reporting and pharmacovigilance
was found to be deficient. The respondents felt that ADR reporting is necessary and is a professional obligation. Among
95.6% of the responders who encountered ADRs, of which only 11.9% reported ADRs. The responders also felt that there is
no need to report already known ADR. The reason for under reporting of ADR was due to the lack of time and they did not
know where and how to report an ADR. The deficiencies in KAP of clinical practitioners regarding ADR reporting and
pharmacovigilance needs urgent attention by giving lectures, conducting continued medical education (CME) and
conferences for the success of pharmacovigilance program and for the better clinical management of the patients.
<Email>drnaveenar26@gmail.com</Email><articletype>Research</articletype><volume>6</volume><issue>2</issue><year>2016</year><keyword>ADR reporting, pharmacovigilance,Clinical practitioners,Knowledge,Attitude and Practice</keyword><AUTHORS>Naveena R,Majagi SI,Torgal SS</AUTHORS><afflication> Department of Pharmacology, St John’s medical college and Hospital, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India., Department of Pharmacology, Gadag institute of medical science, Mallasamudra, Gadag, Karnataka, India. , Department of Pharmacology, KLE University’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belagavi, Karnataka, India.</afflication></Article></Articles>
