Organization (WHO) criteria for ethical promotion of drugs and International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers
and Associations (IFPMAs) Code of Practice. An observational, cross sectional study was conducted from December 2015 to
May 2016 at Travancore Medical College, Kollam, Kerala. A total of 200 DPLs were collected from various departments.
All the DPLs were evaluated based on WHO criteria and IFPMA Code of Practice. The DPLs were also analyzed for
additional information viz quality of graphs, number of appealing images and objectionable words / tall claims. None of the
DPLs ha complete information in accordance with WHO and IFPMAs Code of Practice. Side effects and major adverse
reactions were mentioned in 79 DPLs which is 40% only. Precautions and contraindications were mentioned in 85 DPLs
which is only 43% of total. Drug interactions were mentioned in only 47 DPLs which is 24% only. Name and address of the
manufacturer was mentioned in 128 DPLs (64%). The least mentioned was the date of production of DPLs which accounts
for just 9% of the total (17 out of 200 DPLs). And more than 50% of DPLs were not having searchable references. Most
DPLs did not provide all the information as per WHO and IFPMA guidelines. The information provided in many DPLs is
biased and the credibility of the information is questionable. Almost all of them were focusing on positive aspects of the drug
and little was mentioned about side effects, contraindications and interactions. Hence a doctor should verify the validity or
authenticity of the information provided in DPLs from other sources of drug information prior to drawing any conclusion
based on data presented in DPLs
<Email>kanhaiahmore@gmail.com</Email><articletype>Research</articletype><volume>9</volume><issue>2</issue><year>2019</year><keyword>PESIMSR,Schummock and Thornton scale,World Health Organization,IFPMAs,DPLs</keyword><AUTHORS>Leena A,Chandrasekhar Reddy B,Pundarikaksha HP,Kanhaiah More,B Samskar</AUTHORS><afflication>Department of Pharmacology, PES Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, India,Department of Pharmacology, PES Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, India,Department of Pharmacology, PES Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, India,Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology, Prathima Institute of Medical Sciences, Karimnagar, Telangana, India,Department of Pharmacology, Katuri Medical College, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh.</afflication></Article></Articles>
