<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><Articles><Article><id>222</id><JournalTitle>AWARENESS AND KNOWLEDGE ON MOTHER TO CHILD TRANSMISSION OF HIV AMONG PREGNANT WOMEN ATTENDING THE ANTENATAL CLINIC AT MNAZI MMOJA HOSPITAL, IN ZANZIBAR, TANZANIA</JournalTitle><Abstract>It was a cross sectional descriptive study from the pregnant mothers who attended Mnazi Mmoja RCH Clinic, in Zanzibar, Tanzania. A total of 130 mothers attended the Clinic were interviewed during one month study period on their awareness and knowledge on mother to child transmission (MTCT) of HIV. All mothers (100%) had ever heard about HIV/AIDS and essential of its testing. A substantial proportion of mothers (89.5%) had ever tested for HIV. Majority of mothers (88.4%) were knowledgeable on MTCT of HIV, nevertheless 68.5% were aware of possible prevention of MTCT. Our study showed that the pregnant women have adequate awareness about HIV infection and its transmission from mother to child. The government’s awareness programs had significantly created the awareness.
