Methods: The questionnaire based, cross sectional study was carried out on clinicians from different clinical departments of a tertiary care teaching hospital, after getting approval of the Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) to obtain information about various issues on RUM. Written informed consent was obtained. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: The study was done on 100 respondents between 25-70 years. 93.9% were aware about the term RUM and 91% practiced it, 98.4% were aware of the ingredients, 92.4% knew the cost, 97% were aware of the adverse effects, interactions and contraindications of the drugs they prescribed. All were informing the patient regarding the disease; drug therapy and regular follow up. Though 48.4% practiced ‘P’ drug concept, only 31.8% knew the STEP criteria for its selection. 92.4% were aware about EM, 43.9% had NLEM available at their work place and almost 95.4% thought there should be NLEM in each department and expressed the need for regular training about RUM. 56% prescribed drugs by generic names and 34.8% used brand names. 68% preferred to prescribe both individual as well as fixed drug dose combination. 76% relied on standard text books for obtaining drug information. Conclusion: In conclusion, it is encouraging finding that majority of respondents were aware about various issues concerned with RUM. But still awareness about few issues like P-drug concept, STEP criteria for its selection and existence of NLEM at their work place, number of drugs in NLEM are limited. Inadequate/improper knowledge in certain areas is a matter of concern that needs to be addressed by conducting similar studies
<Email>drsgeetha94093@gmail.com</Email><articletype>Research</articletype><volume>11</volume><issue>1</issue><year>2021</year><keyword>Rational use of medicines,Essential medicines,P-drugs,Knowledge,Practice.</keyword><AUTHORS>Dr Geetha,Dr Shobha Kamble,Dr. Md.
