where it accumulates. Serving as a natural shield against UV radiation, melanin is primarily produced by neural crest
melanocytes, forming supranuclear caps around the perinuclear region to safeguard DNA from harmful ultraviolet rays. Over
the past few decades, melanin has garnered increased attention in research and development, finding applications in diverse
fields such as organic semiconductors, bio-electronics, photo-protection, photo-acoustic imaging, and nanoparticle drug
delivery. Synthetic melanin nanoparticles (MNPs) offer a broad spectrum of UV-Vis absorption. Natural MNPs, aside from
their numerous applications, also showcase a variety of uses. Computational modeling methods are employed to optimize
nanostructures. This review delves into the properties, types, and bio-origin of melanin, addressing hypopigmentation and
hyperpigmentation while providing insights into their management. Furthermore, it explores melanin's physiological
functions across various biological domains, encompassing antioxidant effects, radio protective effects, sun screening effects,
immunomodulation enhancements, and hepatoprotection
<Email>drkappa@gmail.com</Email><articletype>Research</articletype><volume>13</volume><issue>2</issue><year>2023</year><keyword> Melanin, UV-Protection, Anti-oxidants, Biosynthesis, Therapy</keyword><AUTHORS>Elakiya R, Elamathi V,Karpagam Kumara Sundari S,Senthamarai R</AUTHORS><afflication>Department of Pharmacology, Periyar College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Trichy, Tamil Nadu, India,Dean, Periyar College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Trichy, Tamil Nadu, India,Principal, Periyar College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Trichy, Tamil Nadu, India</afflication></Article></Articles>
