offices. Participants from seven large to medium ophthalmology departments worldwide were interviewed via phone for one
to two hours to assess their satellite practices. The primary objectives of most satellite offices included achieving success,
profitability, and enhancing patient access. Various subspecialties such as ophthalmology, refractive surgery, retina, and
oculoplastics were represented in these satellite practices. Faculty recruitment for satellite offices often involved both tenured
and non-tenured track doctors, with some departments exclusively following one track. Despite differences in track, scholarly
productivity among satellite faculty matched that of colleagues at the main campus, with an emphasis on community-based
and clinical research. However, resident education was limited in satellite offices. While satellite practices contributed
significantly to departmental finances, they accounted for a smaller proportion of revenues compared to visits at the main
campus. Satellite offices have facilitated a more favorable payor mix for academic ophthalmology departments and improved
financial stability. Nonetheless, challenges such as maintaining the department's brand name, upholding standards and
operating procedures, and integrating faculty remain. With healthcare reform initiatives underway, academic ophthalmology
departments are poised to benefit from the continued expansion of satellite clinics
<Email>Bavandla @gmail.com</Email><articletype>Research</articletype><volume>11</volume><issue>2</issue><year>2021</year><keyword> Academic ophthalmology, Satellite offices, Faculty recruitment, Financial stability, Healthcare reform</keyword><AUTHORS>Dr Bavandla Keerthi</AUTHORS><afflication>Assistant Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, Katuri medical college & Hospital, Chinakondrupadu, Guntur, India</afflication></Article></Articles>
