with an incidence ranging from approximately 15% to more than 30%. The main objective was to study the post-operative
complications of colorectal cancer in the department of pharmacy. In this study, 115 patients diagnosed as colon cancer were
enrolled from April 2009 to May 2010 in the department of Surgery RMMCH. The patients were divided into the
complication group and non-complication group according to the occurrence of postoperative complications. The group with
post-operative complications was selected for this study and the results were analyzed with the help of proper statistical
tools. Out of 115 patients with post-operative complications, 77 (66.9%) were male and 38(33.04%) were female. This study
indicates that the post-operative complications were more common in male patients rather than female patients. Most
commonly found post-operative complications were Respiratory problems (7.8%). Least occurring complications were
Abdominal complications, Incisional herniation, Pelvic abscess, Hepatic complications, Renal complications, CNS
complications. In this study most of the patients after surgery has developed post-operative complications. These results may
lead to increased hospital stay and morbidity. These Post-operative complications can be minimized by doing laparoscopic
surgery rather than open surgery. Training of the surgeon, hospital volume and learning curves will maximize patient safety,
surgeon expertise and cost effectiveness. In addition, standardization of post-operative care is essential to minimize
postoperative complications.
<Email>juniorsundresh@yahoo.com</Email><articletype>Research</articletype><volume>3</volume><issue>2</issue><year>2013</year><keyword>Colorectal cancer,post-operative complications,post-operative care</keyword><AUTHORS>N.Junior Sundresh,P.Padmini,K.Ashwini,B.Anilkumar,N.Charan,T.Adiveni,K.Haritha</AUTHORS><afflication>Associate Professor in Surgery, Rajah Muthiah Medical College & Hospital, Annamalai University, Chidambaram- 608002, Tamilnadu, India,Department of Pharmacy Practice, Annamalai University, Chidambaram- 608002, Tamilnadu, India.,Department of Pharmacy Practice, Annamalai University, Chidambaram- 608002, Tamilnadu, India.,Department of Pharmacy Practice, Annamalai University, Chidambaram- 608002, Tamilnadu, India.,Department of Pharmacy Practice, Annamalai University, Chidambaram- 608002, Tamilnadu, India.,Department of Pharmacy Practice, Annamalai University, Chidambaram- 608002, Tamilnadu, India.,Department of Pharmacy Practice, Annamalai University, Chidambaram- 608002, Tamilnadu, India.</afflication></Article></Articles>
