This study was
carried out to analyze the dimensions of the sella turcica of adult Nigerian skulls using two parameters; length and depth. The
study was carried out on 100 lateral radiographs comprising of 69 males and 31 females. The results obtained showed the
Mean ± SD of the length and depth of the sella turcica as 12.59 ± 1.59mm and 8.94 ± 1.99mm respectively. For males, the
Mean ± SD of the sella turcica length was found to be 12.61 ± 1.64mm and depth was found to be 8.97 ± 2.11mm, for that of
females, the Mean ± SD of the sella turcica length was found to be 12.55 ± 1.50mm and depth was found to be 8.87 ±
1.75mm respectively. Results showed an insignificant (P>0.05) difference between the dimensions of male and female
subjects. The results of this study will serve as a normative reference standard that could assist in a more objective evaluation
and detection of pathologic conditions of the sella turcica and its associated pituitary gland. The study could also find use in
other fields such as anthropology and forensic medicine
<Email>aeosunwoke@yahoo.com</Email><articletype>Research</articletype><volume>4</volume><issue>2</issue><year>2014</year><keyword>Sella turcica,Radiologic,Nigeria</keyword><AUTHORS>Osunwoke EA, Mokwe CR,Amah-Tariah FS</AUTHORS><afflication>Department of Human Anatomy, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria.,Department of Human Anatomy, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria.,Department of Human Physiology, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria.</afflication></Article></Articles>
