pneumonia (CAP) in adult population. Methods: In our retrospective study we analyzed 50 case sheets of CAP patients who
were admitted to Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre from Jan 2010 to December 2011 in which various antibiotics given i.v
and oral routes were analyzed. We found that commonly amoxicillin-clavulanate, levofloxacin, cefuroxime, ampicillinsalbactam and azithromycin were used. i.v antibiotics showed better improvement than oral antibiotics. So we applied costeffective analysis of antibiotics and a pharmacoeconomic evaluation was done. The cost effectiveness co-efficient was
calculated as the ratio of antibiotics price to number of asymptomatic days in a month. Results: The cost effectiveness coefficient ratio showed continuous i.v. administration of antibiotic is more expensive than the switch therapy. Conclusion:
Timely switch over from i.v antibiotics to oral antibiotics in an appropriate patient is an efficient way to safeguard the
undesirable expenses
<Email>drpdrsrmc@gmail.com</Email><articletype>Research</articletype><volume>4</volume><issue>3</issue><year>2014</year><keyword>Cost-effective analysis,Pneumonia, antibiotics,Switch therapy</keyword><AUTHORS>P Durairajan,Mrinal Borgohain,S Seethalakshmi</AUTHORS><afflication>Department of Pharmacology, Sri Muthukumaran Medical College Hospital & Research Institute, Chikkarayapuram, Chennai-600069, Tamilnadu, India.,Department of Pharmacology, Sri Ramachandra Medical College & Research Institute, Porur, Chennai-600116, Tamilnadu, India.,Department of Pharmacology, Sri Ramachandra Medical College & Research Institute, Porur, Chennai-600116, Tamilnadu, India.</afflication></Article></Articles>
