88EVALUATION OF ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF LEONURUS CARDIACA HERB IN PICROTOXIN INDUCED CONVULSION IN MICEThe excessive production of free radicals in the human body is involved in the pathogenesis of various diseases including atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, stroke, inflammatory diseases, cancer and epilepsy. The most important effect of free radicals is lipid peroxidation, which causes disruption of cell membrane thereby leading to their destruction. The main aim of this study is to evaluate antioxidant activity of leonurus cardiaca herb in picrotoxin induced epilepsy. All swiss albino mice were divided into five groups and each group contained six animals. Group I (Normal control) received vehicle, group II (epileptic control) received picrotoxin (2 mg/kg i.p.). Group III receive Diazepam (4mg/kg i.p.) + Picrotoxin (2mg/kg i.p.) IV and V received picrotoxin (2 mg/kg i.p.) along with extract of leonurus cardiaca herb 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg respectively. All the groups were treated for seven days. The result shows that lipid peroxidation level in epileptic mice were significantly decreased by leonurus cardiaca herb . The result was expressed as mean ± SEM and was statistically analyzed by one way ANOVA. It was concluded that the administration of leonurus cardiaca in epileptic mice can exert beneficial effects of anti oxidative defense system against that imposed by epilepsy.vinodsshinde11@gmail.comResearch522015Motherwart,MDA,EpilepsyV.
